Private draft
Serbian President Alexander Vučić resigned on the evening of September 27 and said that he would take part in the upcoming parliamentary elections “as an ordinary citizen”. The duties of president will be performed by the Speaker of the National Assembly of Serbia, Ana Brnabić.
Serbian President Alexander Vučić announced his resignation in a public address on the evening of September 27, Meduza reported. He thanked the citizens who, he said, had placed their trust in him twice, and said: “Today is the day when I resign”.
Vučić added that he would take part in the upcoming parliamentary elections “as an ordinary citizen”. The duties of President of Serbia will be performed by the Speaker of the National Assembly of Serbia, Ana Brnabić.
According to the Constitution of Serbia, presidential elections must be held within three months from this day. The earliest date for them, as the Serbian newspaper Danas notes, will be November 1.
Vučić’s resignation has been demanded in Serbia for almost two years already — since November 1, 2024, when 16 people died in Novi Sad after the concrete canopy of the railway station building collapsed. After that, mass protests began in the country, with participants demanding punishment for those responsible and the resignation of the country’s leadership.
At the beginning of September 2026, Vučić said that he would call early parliamentary elections, which are due to take place on October 25. He served as President of Serbia from May 31, 2017, and was re-elected for a second term in 2022.
