A yellow alert was briefly declared in Lithuania’s Vilnius County due to an unidentified object
Private draft
On the morning of October 3, a yellow air alert was declared in Lithuania’s Vilnius County because of an unidentified flying object that was presumably a drone. Later, the alert was canceled, and the authorities reported that the object had come from Belarus and had not yet been identified.
Residents of the region were sent warnings on their mobile phones urging them to find a safe place. Due to the appearance of the object, the airspace over Vilnius Airport was temporarily closed, and NATO fighter jets were scrambled.
The head of Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre, Vilmantas Vitkauskas, said that the object entered the country’s airspace from the Republic of Belarus. According to him, the device has not yet been identified.
Later, the yellow air alert was canceled. Thus, the restrictions introduced after the appearance of the unidentified object were lifted the same day.
In recent weeks, drones have repeatedly violated the airspace of European countries. In September, Russian drones flew into Polish airspace, where some of them were shot down by Polish and allied forces.
Romanian and Moldovan authorities also reported violations of airspace by Russian drones. Against the backdrop of these incidents, countries on NATO’s eastern flank have increased airspace monitoring.
