MMTP will send a test shipment of grain to Casablanca

Private draft

Murmansk Commercial Sea Port (MMTP) said it will send a test shipment of grain weighing 29,500 tons to the Moroccan port of Casablanca. The first batch of 3,400 tons for this loading has already been delivered by supplier Demetra-Holding.

In The Moscow Times, citing Reuters, it is reported that the cargo will go to the Moroccan port of Casablanca. MMTP called the operation a test and said that based on its results the parties will consider the possibility of regular shipments.

The port said it has been receiving additional volumes and new cargo categories since September. MMTP believes this gives Russian exporters an alternative deep-water, year-round route to global markets.

Reuters writes that previously most Russian grain went through Black Sea and Azov ports, but now companies are increasingly using Baltic routes. According to the agency, due to the decline in shipments through the Azov and Black seas, exporters had to look for other destinations, and the closer Baltic ports turned out to be heavily congested.

In September, 1.2 million tons, or more than 60% of all sea grain exports, were shipped through Baltic Sea ports, Reuters reports. Against this backdrop, companies are repurposing fertilizer and coal terminals for grain transshipment.
