Rosstat website remains unavailable for several days after cyberattack
Private draft
The Rosstat website has not been working for several days after a cyberattack, and instead of statistics it displays a maintenance notice. The agency suggests looking for up-to-date data in its social media accounts and has promised to restore the service’s availability soon.
On the Rosstat website on November 4, a maintenance notice was displayed instead of statistical data, and the detector404.ru service had recorded access problems as early as November 3. The agency suggests looking for current information in its social media accounts.
From October 29 to November 1, the Rosstat website was subjected to a cyberattack. On November 1, the service promised to restore the service’s availability for users soon.
Rosstat claims that no compromise or data leak occurred. Hackers claimed to have stolen 23 TB of information, including data on Russia’s losses in the war in Ukraine, demographic and economic statistics, as well as documents marked “for official use only”.
After the hack, as claimed, a message was left on the website in Belarusian: “No one will escape responsibility”. After the start of the war, the authorities stopped publishing many data, including oil and gas production, petroleum product output, and detailed customs statistics.
Almost all demographic statistics are also closed, and the latest population data were available as of the beginning of 2025. Rosstat also stopped disclosing information on how many Russians have income below the poverty line.
Problems with access to data also affected companies that cannot submit reports. One user on VKontakte wrote on Rosstat’s page: “We’re waiting, it’s impossible to work. Reports are on fire”, and the agency extended the deadline for submitting primary statistical data to November 13.
