According to TASS calculations based on reports from regional authorities and open data, in 2026 the number of people killed in Russia as a result of bear attacks rose to 30. Three of them are in Tomsk Oblast.
The highest number of such cases — nine — was recorded in Krasnoyarsk Krai. On Monday, TASS, citing emergency services, reported that in the taiga of Tomsk Oblast, the body of a 62-year-old man with multiple injuries characteristic of a bear attack was found.
TASS writes that in Siberia and the Far East there is a difficult situation with bears coming out to populated areas. According to the agency, in recent years the population of these animals has grown sharply in the forests, and the current year has been a poor harvest year in the taiga. Hunger, as stated in the publication, drives the predators to populated areas, where most attacks on people occur.
