The state prosecution requested 15 years in a high-security penal colony and a fine of 90 million rubles for former Minister for Open Government Affairs Mikhail Abyzov, in addition to the previous sentence. RBC was told this by two participants in the trial; the request was made during closing arguments in the case of the alleged embezzlement of 394 million rubles in the investment of funds by the Russian Venture Company (RVC).
The prosecutor also asked to ban Abyzov for three years from holding positions related to organizational, administrative, and managerial functions in government bodies. In addition, the prosecution proposed a two-year and four-month restriction of freedom for him and to strip the former minister of the Order of Friendship.
A new charge of large-scale fraud was brought against Abyzov in September 2025. According to investigators, he exerted pressure on RVC in an effort to secure funding for the American company Alion Energy. Abyzov himself denied guilt and claimed that his investments were lawful.
In January 2026, it became known that the case could be dropped because the statute of limitations for criminal prosecution had expired. In March 2026, Moscow’s Tverskoy District Court extended Abyzov’s detention until June 15.
In December 2023, Moscow’s Preobrazhensky Court sentenced Abyzov to 12 years in a high-security penal colony in the case involving the organization of a criminal group and the theft of 4 billion rubles from the energy companies Sibeko and Regional Electric Networks. In November 2025, the cassation court upheld this sentence without changes.
