In the Trump administration, Sergio Gor is being discussed as a possible successor to Marco Rubio

Private draft

In Donald Trump’s administration, Sergio Gor is being discussed as a possible successor to Marco Rubio as U.S. Secretary of State. According to The Moscow Times, citing The Washington Sun, Gor is also mentioned as a candidate for White House chief of staff.

The Washington Sun, founded by former Washington Post journalists, writes, citing multiple sources, that the current U.S. ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, is being considered for high-level posts after the recently concluded congressional elections. Among the options, the publication’s sources name the position of secretary of state and the post of White House chief of staff.

According to the publication, Gor is a trusted ally of Marco Rubio. Rubio himself and chief of staff Susie Wiles have not publicly stated any intention to leave, but some State Department employees and Republican Party figures believe Rubio may step down to prepare for a presidential campaign in 2028 or 2032.

Gor also serves as the U.S. special envoy for South and Central Asia. The Washington Sun writes that he helps organize high-level visits to India, including trips by Rubio, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and former Under Secretary of Defense for the Army Dan Driscoll, and also takes part in meetings with officials outside India, including Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Since being appointed ambassador in November 2025, Gor has often traveled with Rubio, and last week they appeared together in Atlanta at the G20 summit. Samir Lalwani of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said that at times it seems as though Ambassador Gor is performing the duties of deputy secretary of state.

The publication also writes that Gor was born in Uzbekistan during Soviet times, although he had previously refused to acknowledge that fact. According to two of his acquaintances, in international politics he focuses on deals and the interests of American business, and an American official believes this approach is especially effective in Central Asia.

The Washington Sun adds that Gor’s sons are involved in a company planning tungsten development in Kazakhstan, and he invited Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to the White House for a meeting with Trump and other Central Asian heads of state. The question of whether the new Democratic Congress will support his possible nomination for secretary of state remains open; previously, all Democrats voted against his appointment as ambassador to India as part of a larger package of nominees.
